Hiring

  • If you plan to hire any individual for services rendered during your Urban Program you must determine whether that individual is categorized as a temporary employee or independent contractor.
    • To do so, please complete the temporary employee or independent contractor checklist and email it to Hannah Chong in the Legal department.
      • This form must be completed and sent to the Legal department BEFORE making a commitment to an individual to be paid as an independent contractor because Legal may well conclude that the individual should actually be classified as an employee.
    • For more information about temporary employees and independent contractors, read the Independent Worker or Employee article in the Staff Handbook.
      • Note: The default classification of workers is "Employee," not "Independent Contractor." Generally, a person can only be classified as an Independent Contractor if they own their own business in the field in which you're hiring them.
    • If the individual must be hired as a Temporary Employee, hire them by following the hiring procedures.
    • If you hire someone as a temporary employee for your project, you must also terminate their employment at the end of the project.
  • No advance money may be used to hire anyone for ongoing services.
